The atomization process begins with high quality raw materials that are melted in a 5,000 lb vacuum induction furnace. After verification of the desired chemistry, the molten metal is poured into a tundish. A nozzle at the bottom of the tundish directs the molten metal into the atomizing chamber, where the metal is atomized by the interaction between high pressure inert gas and the liquid metal stream. Either argon or nitrogen gas can be used for atomization. The spherical powder particles formed by atomization cool at rates up to 106 C per second, yielding chemically homogeneous powder.

Crucible Compaction Metals' process for screening atomized powder is an exclusive innovation that ensures cleanliness, with or without an inert gas atmosphere. To prevent contamination and allow for rapid grade changes, screening equipment is located in rooms with stainless steel interior walls and independent air handling and control systems. The rooms can efficiently screen large volumes of powder to any desired particle size. After screening, the powder is blended to obtain a uniform particle size distribution.

Commonly available alloys include:

Other nickel and iron based alloys can be produced at customer request. Please submit your inquiry to sales@cruciblecompaction.com and include the alloy, desired particle size, and production quantity.
